Wilson Memorial General Hospital
Chief Executive Officer
ANNUAL REPORT
April 1, 2010 to March 31, 2011
It is my pleasure to submit the Chief Executive Officer’s Annual Report to the members of the Corporation of Wilson Memorial General Hospital for the period April 1st, 2010 to March 31st, 2011.
The staff of Wilson Memorial General Hospital was presented with a number challenges resulting from new legislation such as the Excellent Care For All Act, the Public Sector Compensation Restraint to Protect Public Services Act and Broader Public Sector Expenses Directives. These legislations required a team effort in order to achieve the necessary result within a limited time.
The Board of Directors under the Excellent Care for All Act established a Quality Committee comprised of board members, medical staff and employees. The overall role of this new board committee is to assist the Board of Directors in overseeing and ensuring the quality of clinical care, patient safety and customer services provided throughout the organization. One of the first activities for the Quality Committee was to successfully oversee the preparation of the hospital’s annual Quality Improvement Plan.
The staff of Wilson Memorial General Hospital has once again fulfilled its mission of providing quality health care to our clients both within and beyond our catchment area. We continue to face increased demand from the public for additional services under an environment of fiscal restraint. This situation is expected to escalate over the coming years due to government budgetary policies. Our challenge is to maintain an acceptable balance between hospital budgets and client services.
Wilson Memorial General Hospital forecasted an operational deficit for the 20010/2011 fiscal year. The final result was a deficit prior to building amortization of $86,925.00 based on a total operating budget of $7,072,737.00. There were a number of situations this year that contributed to our deficit. The majority of colonoscopy cases were not funded and this lack of support has resulted in additional stain on our resources. Wilson Memorial General Hospital continues to be very active often causing the facility to be in an overflow situation. This high level of activity along with the down turn in the economy created financial pressures for our organization. During these times of financial restrain we must continue to be creative in order to meet the demands of our clients.
During the 2010/2011 fiscal year Wilson Memorial General Hospital spent $365,000.00 to upgrade medical equipment and building infrastructure. A major upgrade to MDRD costing $122,600.00 was successfully completed.
The staff went through a year of change with the full integration of administration between The McCausland Hospital and Wilson Memorial General Hospital as of April 1st, 2010. The administration staff has been working towards developing joint programs, education and policies.
Our two facilities plus the Manitouwadge General Hospital entered into an agreement with the North West LHIN to perform an operational review of all three sites looking for efficiencies through integration. The consultants in their final report state that all three organizations ran efficiently and provided a high level of quality health care. They stated
“Extensive comparative and peer benchmarking data was reviewed and analyzed as part of the operational audit. It is noted that as a result of this review no efficiency or dollars savings were indentified within the three hospitals. The three hospitals were cost efficient as compared to their peers, and no dollar savings were identified.”
Over the next few months the three facilities will be having discussions with the NW LHIN to determine which recommendations will be enacted upon.
Wilson Memorial General Hospital and The McCausland Hospital are planning to continue implementing their joint integration strategy. Over the next year both organizations will be working together to identify, implement and operate various integration initiatives. The purpose of these initiatives will be to enhance our local and regional healthcare systems.
In summary, I sincerely thank each and every one of the Hospital staff and the Medical staff for their dedication, commitment and hard work. Our staff has always served the community with the highest degree of excellence and each is a credit to his/her individual profession.
I would also like to thank the entire Wilson Memorial General Hospital team, which is made up of the Board of Directors, the Auxiliary, volunteers and all the residents of our catchment area. Your support over the past year has allowed Wilson Memorial General Hospital to continue to provide first class health care services to the community.
Respectfully submitted,
Paul Paradis
Chief Executive Officer
