Northern Ontario - life at it’s best! Marathon is situated on the North Shore of Lake Superior between Sault Ste. Marie and Thunder Bay, along the TransCanada corridor.

You will find a treasure trove of recreational opportunities in Marathon. Penn Lake Park features a beautiful sand beach and playground right in town. Spectacular areas such as Neys Provincial Park and Pukaskwa ational Park are mere minutes away. Pukaskwa boasts wilderness canoe trips through rock gorges and chasms along the White River. Nature lovers will also enjoy Mink Creek Falls, Hattie Cove, and the sand dunes at the mouth of the Pic River. Spectacular views from Hawk’s Ridge and the Voyageur Coastal Hiking Trail are within walking distance from town. Mountain biking, canoeing, and kayaking are very popular pursuits. Only 2 km from the hospital, Marathon Cross Country Ski Club provides 15 km of groomed trails for skate and classic, 5 km which are lit for night skiing. Snowmobiles will enjoy over 200 km of groomed trails. Marathon’s recreation complex boasts the only indoor pool along the northshore, sauna, and whirlpool, as well as an arena. There is a pristine Stanley Thompson Signature nine-hole golf course in town. In addition to local gold fields, the area is home to a number of geological wonders which attracts many rock hounds. Many come to find deposits of the rare spectralite, found nowhere else in North America. Working out of the Marathon Family Health Team, family physicians love where they work and play. The physicians promote a collaborative model of care with many advance practice initiatives and opportunities. Wilson Memorial General Hospital is a recently renovated facility with 9 Acute Care beds, 12 Chronic Care as well as a 24 hour Emergency Department.  Low risk obstetrics and chemotherapy are provided by local physicians. Cataract surgey and colonoscopy services are provided by visiting specialists. Within the Centre is a fully equipped Laboratory, Diagnostic Imaging and Rehabilitation Departments assisting inpatient acute, chronic care, as well as outpatients.

There are two telemedicine suites at the hospital - one devoted to clinical work and one to education. There is an additional telemedicine suite at the clinic making access to specialist care easier.

 OUR HOSPITAL

Wilson Memorial General Hospital was constructed in 1946 as a three storey wooden building. During the year of 1966 the Hospital recognized that the existing building was inadequate to meet their needs. Plans were implemented to provide a totally new hospital at the current location. 

Since its opening in 1971, Wilson Memorial General Hospital has served the communities of Marathon, Heron Bay, Pic River, Mobert, and White River with excellent medical care. The hospital delivers health services to this catchment area of 7500 people. This high quality of commitment from the medical staff and support staff make our facility first class. Their training, experience and individual skills enable this hospital to meet the challenges the future brings. Great care has been taken to provide efficient service to the public.

Wilson Memorial General Hospital held it's Official Grand Opening, marking the end of it's renovation project on Wednesday, October 6, 2004.
